Determine Your Face Shape. What hairstyle should we avoid? 38

Short hair cut suits to anyone depending on the style. To make sure it doesn’t look too masculine in general, keep it shorter at the sides and avoid anything too short at the back. Stay soft and feminine with plenty of layering, especially around the ears and nOval Face Hairstyleape of the neck.
However, there are a few basic rules to follow when choosing :

Oval faces can get away with anything. Natalie Portmann, Demi Moore and Kylie are the living proof – even short crops don’t detract from their features.
Heart-shaped faces need more volume in the nape of the neck and less on top.
Round faces need plenty of height to lengthen the face, finer at the sides and length in the neck.
Square faces need movement to soften the features. Avoid structured cuts which can make a square face look hard.
The shape of the head is very important too, especially for crops. Ask yourself how far you’re prepared to go. Good communication with your stylist is essential, especially when going for a short cut – there are endless possibilities, so you need to be specific. Make the time to talk about exactly what you want before taking your seat. So, below is a basic guide on how to find out what face shape you have, and tips on what compliment these shapes. You need tape measure, paper and something to write with.

*Hold the tape measure on the top of one of your cheekbones, and measure across to the other cheekbone, and write that number down.
*Run the tape measure across your face to measure, horizontally, the widest part of your jaw line, and write that number down.
*Measure across the widest part of your forehead, generally just above your brow line and below your hair line, and write that number down.
*Finally, run the tape measure from the tip of your hair line to the bottom tip of your chin, and write that number down.

Face Shape Results:

Oblong Face:Your face is longer than wide.

*Going short to medium on your face is key.
*Do soft, wispy bangs, and fullness at the sides of your face.
*Don’t have too much hair length as it will elongate your face. So, when it hits your shoulders, bring it back up to chin level or just below.

Oval Face: Your face length is almost exactly 1 1/2 times longer than the width of your face.

*Most any hairstyle will look great on you, as your face is considered the “perfect” shape.
*Do mix up your looks with any length hair, but also try “slicked-back” styles for evening.
*Don’t clutter your face with heavy bangs, or blow forward shags, otherwise your face will loose it’s shape, and will add weight to it.

Round Face:Your face is just about as wide as it is long.

*Little angel face, your needs are fullness and height at the crown.
*Do layer your crown hair and keep the sides close to your face and slightly longer than chin length as in the popular “flip” style, or go for a short, sassy, swept-back styles.
*Don’t wear chin length hair that is rounded like your face, since the more weight put around your ears will give your face that “full moon” look and make your face appear wider.

Heart Shape Face: You have wide cheekbones and/or forehead and narrow jaw.
Square Face: Your forehead and jaw line widths are close to equal.

*Sweetheart and side-parted hairstyles or chin-length and longer haircuts are for you!
*Do incorporate swept-forward layers with wispy bangs or go for the classic chin-length bob, which you wear so well – remember, with your face, your cheekbones are an asset.
*Don’t go short and emphasize your upper face since it will make you look top-heavy, with a pointy chin.

Diamond Face: Your face is widest at the cheekbones, and your forehead and jaw line are about equal in width.Dramatic and delicate, your face can wear any haircut or hairstyle, except having too much hair on it!

*Do try everything, from curly to straight, with straight bangs above the brow, and swept-back styles and be sure, when going short, to leave weight in the nape area of your neck.
*Don’t wear brushed forward styles or a lot of hair on your face, you’re perfect shape will get lost.

Knowing all that you can be specific when you ask your stylist for a hairstyle. But we all know, true beauty is a combination of looking your best on the outside and feeling your best on the inside. Let your beauty shine through, from the inside out!

I was told that my face shape was a heart, square mix (is that
possible?) If you think so then what haircut would be best for me? Thank you
    so much

No mix from all I know. :) I think your face shape should be ‘inverted triangular’ or diamond. Blunt bangs are usually very flattering for face shapes like some heart shaped and inverted triangular face shapes that feature wide or full foreheads. Blunt cut fringes will help to balance a large forehead and soften facial features including a pointy or prominent chin. While blunt bangs will usually work with oval face shapes, they may need to be modified to flatter square or round face shapes. Send me a picture via email or describe your cheekbones, forehead and jaw line if you need more info. Also, check diamond face shape description.

You sound like you really know what you are talking about. So I would like your help. I can NOT for the life of me figure out what face shape I have. One day it looks oval, the next it looks long. I can never tell. Please help!

    Hi Deena,
The oblong face has a long straight cheek line. Most of the time the nose is longish (proportional).

I have VERY broad shoulders. I’d like to be able to waer my hair quite short. How can I do this without making my shoulders look even bigger and my head pin size?

    Hi,
I would like to know what shape my face is. I have a straight square looking hairline. My face measurments are:

Cheeks from outer corner of one eye to outer corner of other eye-14cm
    Forehead across widest part-15cm
    Face length-18cm
Jawline from one end of the ear measured all the way around the chin to the other endof the ear -24cm
I hope you are able to tell me what face shape this is. Thanks.

I *think* my face might be an oval/diamond/heart mix.
It’s definitely widest at the cheekbone-area, and gets slightly narrower in the forehead. Although my jaw is a little wide, I have a long face so I still end up with a pointy chin.
The HEART FACE section said to emphasize the upper face (which sounds good since I’d like to appear to have a smaller jaw in my face), but the DIAMOND FACE section (which sounded right, except my face definitely does not look dramatic… it looks very babyish) says to leave a lot of hair under the neck.
These contradict each other– which should I choose?
    THANKS!!
I could send you a picture, too, if that would help. I’m pretty desperate. :]

Hi! Well, I am definitly square, and currently I have waist length blond hair. But, it is getting terribly boring. Unfortunately I absolutely refuse to cut length from my hair, because I love love love love having long hair, but I need to do SOMETHING different. I’m stuck as to what I ought to do. I would really appreciate some advice.

I have no idea (even with all the measurements above) how to tell. I want to go really short, kinda spiky, i guess kinda punk or modern, i dont know. My measurements were (in order listed in article) 7 1/2, 9, 8, and 7 (in). Can you help me out with what facial shape i am. It would be greatly appreciated

  14. KittiChai Oct 26, 2007 12:57 PM

i have an oval face and the only thing that people with this shape should avoid is styling their hair to strict.
Another easy way to find out your shape:
Trace your face lines with a lipstick or something else while standing in front of the mirror.

  15. Lori Nov 15, 2007 11:49 AM

I am in the same situation is Lori- I’m not totally sure on my face shape. Sometimes it seems round, other times it seems oval.

Hey! I’m 13-years-old, and I have no idea what type of hairstyle to get. I believe I have a heart-shaped face, but its not, like, EXTREME… like, my jaw is narrow, but not MUCH narrower than my cheekbones and forehead. I don’t even know if that made sense, but that’s okay. I was just wondering what type of hairstyle would be best for me (and it would help if you gave a reference to a celebrity or something… I don’t speak ‘Hair’) Thank you!

I have a long face as everyone tells me, and I’ve always had my hair short.

Hi, I would love if you could tell me my face shape. Can you also recommend short hairstyles for my face? Please help, thank you!

  34. Maddie Nov 23, 2010 5:26 PM

Hi Sarah!I’m sure they will look great. Don’t wear your hair down all-one-length! it will outline the shape and try bangs and layers to add more volume. Also i suggest you wear long earrings. You got an advantage: long, even very long earnings, look better on your face shape than any shape. It will do it for you!:)

  35. yin Jan 22, 2011 10:40 PM

Dear all, I am curious about my face shape too. I ve measured and see that: the length is 1 and half the width. My chin is a little pointy but my jaw line is a bit square. When I smile it looks like oval but normally, it looks a bit square.
Would anyone could help me to determine my face shape.
    Thank u in advance.

I really favored Determine Your Face Shape. What hairstyle should we avoid? – Beauty Hobby. But it is the product quality, not quantity, of the links that is certainly crucial. The other websites needs to be relevant to your industry, and preferably highly thought to be themselves.

  38. Rachel Sep 3, 2012 2:27 PM

I was wondering if you could tell me my face shape??? I’m lost. At one point I think it’s square, then diamond, or round, or heart!!

My cheekbones are 26cm with the measuring tape laid across the face on the skin, and 15cm measured straight across the face but not on the skin.

My jaw is 24cm with the tape laid across the skin, and 12cm off the skin.

My forehead is 20cm on the skin and 12 off the skin.

The length of my face is 19cm.

    Can anyone help??
