When it comes to modeling, many people have the notion that the “new model” have to live in a big city. After all, that’s where most of the big modeling agencies are. Granted, if you lived in Los Angeles, California or New York City, you’d probably have an easier time getting into the modeling industry. But what if you can’t just pack your things and move to California or New York? What then?
Following are some tips to get you on your way into the modeling industry quickly from Lance Fish:

1. Take Pictures, specifically Head Shots – keep them simple. Wear neat and clean clothing. Don’t worry about wearing the latest fashion or style. Ladies, keep your make up simple. In fact, it would be best if you had several pictures of you without any make up. The same goes for hairstyles. Clear your face of any hair so that your face is fully visible. Keep your hair neat, clean and simple. If you can’t afford a professional photographer, then use a basic camera. Make sure you have good lighting.

2. You will need a resume of yourself. In your resume, include your Modeling Experience, hobbies, interests, and vital stats such as height, and weight. This is called a portfolio that what agencies will review.

3. Research the addresses of modeling agents and agencies in your area. You can look this up in your local phone book, public library or online at Hollywood North. There are literally thousands of agencies across Canada and the United States to contact.

4. After sending out your portfolio, do a follow up phone call or email every 2 weeks afterwards. Remember, these agencies may be getting hundreds of portfolios sent to them each week. What will get their attention? Make follow up phone calls – lots of them.

5. Utilize as many communications tools as possible. This includes calling them on the phone, emailing, sending letters through direct mail, and leverage the web including sites like Hollywood North. The best thing is to use a combination of all of the aforementioned.

6. Develop your modeling skills. Look for local modeling schools or classes in or near your area. If there are none, then research your public library for books or videos. If you still have no luck, then you can go online to places such as Amazon.com and other booksellers that will have modeling videos and books.
7. Stay clear of any model agency telling you that you have to pay money to sign on with them. In general, Agencies receive a commission when you work.

  4. KittiChai Says:

I would love to start modeling but I think I still weight too much to model because most models who are as tall as me weight - 10 kilos and I am already thin :(

  5. rory Says:

I’m not skinny enough, but most models are bulimic
so as lily allen would say…whatevs.

  6. Rosie Says:

  7. Natalie Says:

hi im natalie well i have always wanted to model but i never knew how to get into it and i would really like to try and see how i go

  8. KittiChai Says:

search the net for serious agencies and send them 2 pics, face and full body shot, just as maddie explained.
I think that’s the easiest way to start!

  9. rory Says:

I wish good look to all girls here who wish to model- do not give up!

  10. Mary Says:

thanks!! maybe i could be a model someday..but not now…i don’t loook like one…but thanks for the tips!!

  11. rory Says:

Mary, you don’t have to look like a model- I’m sure you are beautiful the way you are! I personally think modeling is overated and a career that does not last long at all.

  12. KittiChai Says:

mary, most of the models are not that kind of beauties you would look at in real life, most of them are plain but alterable that’s what the fashion industry wants!

  13. Mary Says:

thanks girls!! i feel much better!! naw i wouldn’t want to get in that field..too much going on..i like me right now…

  14. rory Says:

KittiChai, I have to disagree w/ you! I think MISS AMERICA girls and pageant winners are plain looking girls that are know “beautiful” thanks to much working, including plastic surgery and complete makeovers, while many models are unique looking and may not be considered beautiful in real life.

  15. KittiChai Says:

Those girls aren’t models for me?
    I meant editorial models

  16. KittiChai Says:

    does anyone else watch ANTM?
    i miss heather!

  17. rory Says:

I haven’t watched much of this season.

  18. KittiChai Says:

    isn’t today the final???

  19. rory Says:

    Yes. I just watched it!
That’s a way to get into modeling- be on a reality TV show.

  20. rory Says:

Another way to get into modeling is contests… but the odds are kind of low.

  21. KittiChai Says:

Oh no saleisha won I wanted Chantal so much too win because I think she’s such a positive person!

  22. rory Says:

    Chantal was kind of annoying.

  23. KittiChai Says:

Sure, but I think she looked more like a model.
At ANTM they always seem to choose way too boring models for #1… I think people can identify themselves more with people that have edges like Heather than polished ones like Saleisha!

  24. Shawna Marie Says:

    Hi,
My name is Stephanie, I’m 19 years old. I was never one of those “girly girls” and never thought too much of my looks. I live in Alaska and am a outside, nature type of girl. However, over the last few years, I have had sooo many strangers and people i know either ask me who I model for or tell me to be a model. I have been told I have “sexy, unique green eyes” and very nice natural dark hair, I’m petite, about 110 lbs and about 5′5″. I have been thinking about becoming a model because soo many people talk to me about it. I’m always getting my picture taken by strangers and I would like to know how I could get in touch with a professional to see what they think. What do I do?
